Manifestations of Anti-Semitism in Czechoslovak Silesia during the First Republic (1918-1938)

Jan DVOŘÁK

Central European Papers 2015, 3(1):36-50 | DOI: 10.25142/cep.2015.003

The study discusses the manifestations of anti-Semitism on the territory of Czech Silesia during the period of the so-called First Republic (1918-1938). It charts its evolution and outlines the motives that led to the development of anti-Semitic moods. In spite of predominantly minor incidents and anti-Semitic manifestations resulting most frequently from the worsened economic situation of the non-Jewish population or from national problems omnipresent in multinational Czechoslovak Silesia, local Jews were respected by the majority society during a considerable part of the interwar period. The majority society was aware of their importance. But in...

Assimilation versus Cultural Autonomy: The Struggle for the Czech and Slovak Minority Rights in Austria in the 20th Century

Zuzana POLÁČKOVÁ

Central European Papers 2015, 3(1):51-62 | DOI: 10.25142/cep.2015.004

This paper outlines the significance of a fundamental dilemma in qualifying minority rights in the 20th century during the three periods separated by the years 1918, 1945,1989, and it argues that there was the continuing contradiction between the principle of state sovereignty and territorial integrity on the one hand, and the recognition of national self-determination on the other hand. From the end of the WWI in 1918, ethnic or national minorities were also seen as a potential danger for keeping the peace. In this context the following questions are still relevant. Austrian national law (Nationalitätenrecht) was ahead of its time, and it has become...

Štefan ŠUTAJ

Central European Papers 2015, 3(1):63-87 | DOI: 10.25142/cep.2015.005

It discusses in detail the activities related to ratification of the Armistice Agreement with Hungary, the talks of the Potsdam Conference and the diplomatic activities before the upcoming Peace Conference in Paris in 1946 in relation to the Soviet Union and to the western allies.

The Nationalizing Processes in Slovakia 1969-1988. The Case Study of Hungarian Minority

Juraj MARUŠIAK

Central European Papers 2015, 3(1):88-107 | DOI: 10.25142/cep.2015.006

The paper deals with the situation of Hungarian minority in Slovakia in the period of the regime of so called "Normalization" after the suppression of "Prague Spring" in 1970s and 1980s. The issue of minority policy of Czechoslovak / Slovak government is discussed as a specific aspect of the nationalizing policy. The paper is based on the archival research of the documents provided by Charter 77 and the Committee for Protection of the Hungarian minority rights in Czechoslovakia. The research question is, whether the Slovak Socialist Republic, established after the federalization of Czechoslovakia in 1968, was still a nationalizing state. Paper brings...

The Idea of Central Europe and the Antall Government

Géza JESZENSZKY

Central European Papers 2015, 3(1):108-116 | DOI: 10.25142/cep.2015.007

The anti-communist intellectuals of Hungary knew only too well how much the Soviet-imposed system was inferior to the Western "free world." Inspired by M. Kundera's famous essay on "The Tragedy of Central Europe," but also by 19th and 20th century Hungarian authors, they used the opportunity in 1989 to switch to a multi-party democracy following the West-European model. They expressed their dedication to Central European common interests and solidarity in the 1989 Christmas Manifesto of the Hungarian Democratic Forum, the party which, led by József Antall, won the free elections in Spring, 1990. The program presented to the Hungarian Parliament was...

Social Exclusion Under the Auspices of the State? Case Study of Social Exclusion, Ethnicity and Migration in Osoblaha Region

Dušan JANÁK, jr., Jan BEZDĚK, Václav WALACH

Central European Papers 2015, 3(1):117-140 | DOI: 10.25142/cep.2015.008

This study deals with a still not sufficiently studied phenomenon of social exclusion in the Czech rural regions. On the case of Osoblaha, we point out the influence of regional characteristics of social inclusion on the transformation of the region's social structure. The disadvantage of a region in the spheres of employment, education, community facilities and transport services contributes to emigration of relatively educated population able to work; such population is, to certain degree, substituted by socially excluded persons seeking relatively cheaper housing; and that contributes to increasing local social tension. Together with the analysis...
